Recording with Plug-Ins on Inputs In PreSonus Studio One

In this video, I demonstrate how to record (commit) through plug-in's in PreSonus Studio One. Including the basic setup, and some things to keep in mind when working this way.

When I’m working at my home studio setup, I have a decent selection of outboard Analog Gear that I like to use - on the way into the DAW. So essentially I can impart the tone, character, dynamics before the signal hits the AD Converter’s on my Quantum setup.

This is by far my favourite way to work - as it allows me to capture sounds that are already 80-90% “there” in terms of how they fit into a production.

That being said, I don’t always have access to these pieces of gear! So in the cases where I need to go mobile, I still employ the exact same workflow - the only difference is I’m going through plug-ins vs my outboard gear.

Parallel Compression on Drums Using The Splitter Plug-in In Studio One 5.2+

In this video, I take a look at my basic workflow when using parallel compression on Drums in Studio One with the new Splitter Plug-in. (added in Version 5.2) The splitter has been around for some time now, and I have used it from time to time, but I must admit that there was always a bit of a disconnect for me, until this recent update, that is.

How To Re-Map The Output Routing of Kontakt 6 - Running In Studio One 5

In this video, I demonstrate a simple approach that can be used to remap the Outputs of Native Instruments’ Kontakt 6 - that results in predictable output names, in a logical order.

For anyone who runs Kontakt 6 in Studio One - you may have noticed that the output Routing doesn't necessarily follow the usual "1/2, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8" stereo outputs that one would expect to see.. Instead - we see a mix between, the Main Stereo Outputs, and Aux Channels.. On top of that, it can be a little confusing to add additional outputs, that are mapped in a logical order.

In this video, I demonstrate a simple approach that can be used to help mitigate this issue, that results in predictable output names, in a logical order.

Note - The same workflow can also be applied in Kontakt Version 5 - with the main difference being that there are different version of Kontakt 5 (8 out, 16 out, etc) whereas Kontakt 6 is now seen as 1 plug-in.

Using Direct Inputs on Virtual Instruments In PreSonus Studio One 5

In this video, I demonstrate the "Direct Input" feature in PreSonus Studio One 5 - more specifically, what it does and when & why it might be useful to enable. In addition, I share some useful tips as to a few things to be aware of when using the feature with Virtual Instruments.

If you think about a traditional “writing session” there’s usually a piano, or electric keyboard plugged in and ready to play at a minutes notice. In many cases it can be really useful to have something ready to play, for working out chord progressions, and melodies. When it comes to software, we of course have plenty of different options to choose from, but it can involve loading a virtual instrument, then either record enabling, or input monitoring the instrument. Also depending on certain preferences that may or may not be enabled, this might be linked to a selected track.

In this video, I demonstrate the "Direct Input" feature in PreSonus Studio One 5 - more specifically, what it does and when & why it might be useful to enable. In addition, I share some useful tips as to a few things to be aware of when using the feature with Virtual Instruments.

Session Archiving Workflows when working with External Hardware in PreSonus Studio One 5

In this video, I walk through a basic workflow that I like to use when archiving Mix sessions where external hardware was used.

Although Pipeline XT offer's users the ability to make text notes (of settings), as well as bring in pictures of your hardware all directly within the plug-in interface - IMHO, there are many different reasons why printing (re-recording) tracks that had hardware processing applied, is a good idea when it comes to archiving a Mix.

First - let’s start off with the obvious. It might be the case, that you no longer have a certain piece of hardware in your collection. Or perhaps it’s in need of some maintenance and doesn’t sound the same anymore with the same settings.

These two above reasons alone are a good enough reason to take the time to ensure that you have the ability to recall a Mix sounding “reasonably” the same as where it was left upon client sign-off.

In this video, I walk through a basic workflow that I like to use when archiving Mix sessions where external hardware was used.

Quick Tip - Copying and Pasting Clip Gain Envelopes from One Event to Another In PreSonus Studio One

In this video, I demonstrate how to copy Clip Gain Envelopes (Automation Nodes) from one Event to another in PreSonus Studio One Version 5.0 and above.

Clip Gain was a seriously welcomed feature when Studio One Version 5 was announced. But in some cases, it can be useful to transfer the clip gain adjustments to another Event. A few circumstances where this come into play would be when dealing with Multi-Mic recordings, as well as receiving updated regions that are sitting in a Mixing session.

In this video, I demonstrate how to copy Clip Gain Envelopes (Automation Nodes) from one Event to another in PreSonus Studio One Version 5.0 and above.

How to Store and Recall Pitchlist Presets for 3rd Party Instruments In PreSonus Studio One

In this video, I demonstrate the process of creating Pitchlist Presets for 3rd Party Instruments (such as Kontakt Libraries) in PreSonus Studio One.

One of my favorite things about working with Native Studio One instruments such as Impact XT, would have to be that all the names of the Pads (samples) show up in the Pattern Editor, and MIDI Event Editor. So it tends to be one of my top choices when working quickly with custom samples.

That being said, I also have some personal favourite’s when working with 3rd Party Library’s. So wouldn’t it be great if we could have that SAME useful information show up in these libraries?

Well, the good news is - we can. And we do so by creating Pitchlist Presets.

In this video, I demonstrate the process of creating Pitchlist Presets for 3rd Party Instruments (such as Kontakt Libraries) in PreSonus Studio One.
